1. Description:

Zirconia is a chemical oxide that has low cytotoxicity, is insoluble in water, and therefore reduces the bacterial adhesion. ZrO2 has a wide use in dental implants. Zirconia implants are biocompatible and resistant to corrosion. Also, they have high fracture resistance and bioinert materials; hence, their encapsulation by animal tissues is low. Zirconia is osseoconductive and facilitates bone formation, but studies on zirconia implants have been short term, while for better recognition of its properties, long-term studies are recommended.

Nanozirconia-alumina materials combine the physical and chemical properties of ceramic materials. Alumina-zirconia nanocomposites are new implant materials that show better efficacies than other implant materials. They have antibiofilm activity against certain bacteria [101]. Zirconia nanoparticles are used as polishing agents in dentistry.
