1. Description:

Zirconia and zirconia based materials have been developed and applied to many more and various fields. The exceptional wear and corrosion resistance explain why seals in valves, chemical and slurry pumps are made of zirconia. As oxygen sensors, doped zirconia is used for fuel-air regulation in automobile engines. Zirconia particles are also used as reinforcing inclusions in ceramic matrices. The best known are alumina-zirconia composites which have superior strength, toughness and wear resistance when compared to conventional alumina and are used as cutting tools and in hip and knee prostheses. More recently, zirconia based nanocomposites have also been developed for biomedical applications (dental implants and other devices) combining several toughening mechanisms like t-m transformation, microcracking but also crack deviation due to the presence of elongated secondary phases.
